Thermoptic technology allows for the manipulation of light around an object, meaning a user can change their appearance or even render oneself invisible. Older models use a Thermoptic Shroud or Thermoptic Armor that must be worn on the outside of the body, in the further future, gravity lasers allows for the manipulation of individual photons, meaning a field can be projected around a body or ship from within.
The prevalence of thermoptic armor in the far future means conventional camouflage is no longer required, which is why most soldiers return to brightly colored, intimidating outfits. Laser and scanner technology allows for the detection of a person through even the most powerful thermoptic field, and so invisibility is rarely a deciding factor.
